About Dorthe

Bio

Dorthe is a Danish-American digital artist creating primarily abstract, emotionally expressive works rooted in color, nature, intuition, and joy. Her digitally created abstract works draw from her traditional background in oil and watercolor while embracing the freedom and luminosity of digital media

Artist Statement

For many years, I was drawn to figurative art and the challenge of making something look lifelike. But as a teenager, seeing the work of Asger Jorn in Silkeborg, Denmark opened my eyes to the raw energy of abstraction. I was fascinated by it, even though I did not yet know how to find that freedom in my own work.My breakthrough came later, when I began exploring abstract charcoal drawings and discovered how powerful it felt to let go of control. Abstraction taught me that art does not always need to be planned or explained. Sometimes the most honest work happens when I quiet the logical mind and allow the piece to lead the way. When I discovered digital painting in 2022, everything opened up for me. It gave me the freedom to experiment, layer, change direction, and explore without fear of wasting materials or making mistakes. My work is still rooted in traditional art, but digital painting allows me to follow color, movement, texture, and emotion in a more intuitive way.Today, I create from my inner emotional and spiritual world, but my hope is that the work reaches outward. Through color, organic movement, and a sense of joy and wonder, I want my art to bring light, energy, and connection into the spaces where it lives.

Process

My process is intuitive and often begins without a clear plan. I usually start with color, movement, or a feeling, and then I let the piece develop from there. I try not to overthink it too much, because the best things often happen when I allow the artwork to lead me instead of trying to control every part of it.Most of my work begins with digital painting, using digital brushes, layers, textures, and light. From there, I may continue building the piece by hand, or I may use different apps and digital tools to manipulate, transform, and develop the image further. Even when the process becomes more experimental, the direction is still guided by my eye, my emotions, and my decisions as an artist.Even though digital art has become my main medium, my foundation is still rooted in traditional art — drawing, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and the feeling of building an image by hand. I still periodically create acrylic paintings, and that hands-on practice continues to influence the way I approach texture, movement, and composition in my digital work.Digital creation has given me a freedom I never felt in the same way with traditional materials. I can experiment, change direction, add unexpected textures, and follow the flow without worrying about wasting supplies or ruining the piece. That freedom has become a very important part of my work.

My Journey

I grew up on a farm in Denmark, where quiet time and imagination became a natural part of my life. For many years I was an only child, and while my parents were busy with the demands of farm life, I spent countless hours drawing, painting, and creating my own little worlds.Creativity was always around me in different ways. My grandmother was a porcelain painter, and my best friend’s family were artists. I loved spending time in their home, where making art felt like a normal part of everyday life. Those early experiences stayed with me and helped shape the way I see creativity — not as something separate from life, but as something woven into it.Even though I was always creating, it took me many years to fully see myself as an artist. At age 20, I nearly pursued formal art education in the south of France, but I did not yet have the courage or confidence to take that step. For a long time, art remained something private and personal, shared mostly with close family. That changed in 2007, a few years after I moved to the United States. During a conversation with someone I had just met, I was told, “If you are creating art, you are an artist.” That simple statement stayed with me. It helped me understand that being an artist was not something I needed permission to be. It was something I already was.In 2022, I discovered digital painting, and it opened a new chapter in my creative life. It gave me a sense of freedom I had not experienced in the same way before — the freedom to experiment, layer, change direction, and follow the flow without fear of ruining the piece. Today, my work brings together my traditional roots, my love of color and movement, and my inner emotional and spiritual world. My journey has not been a straight line, but art has always been there. It has been my quiet place, my way of processing life, and my way of connecting with something larger than myself. Through my work, I hope to share that sense of joy, wonder, and inner freedom with others.
