Bio

Dorthe is a Danish-American digital artist creating primarily abstract, emotionally expressive works rooted in color, nature, intuition, and joy. Her digitally created abstract works draw from her traditional background in oil and watercolor while embracing the freedom and luminosity of digital media.

Artist Statement

My work explores the emotional and energetic qualities of color, movement, and abstraction.
After years of striving to capture the visible world realistically, I discovered in abstraction the freedom to express what cannot be seen but can be deeply felt.
I create intuitively, allowing each piece to evolve rather than following a predetermined plan.Although my artistic foundation is rooted in traditional drawing and painting, digital painting has become my primary medium because it gives me the freedom to experiment, layer, and explore without limitation. Every decision remains guided by my eye, my emotions, and my experience as an artist.Rather than representing the world as it appears, I seek to express how it feels. Through vibrant color, organic movement, and rich textures, I hope my work brings a sense of joy, wonder, energy, and connection into the spaces where it lives.

My Process

My process is intuitive and often begins without a clear plan. I usually start with color, movement, or a feeling, allowing the piece to evolve naturally as I respond to what emerges. Rather than trying to control every outcome, I trust the creative process to guide the work.Most of my pieces begin as digital paintings, built with brushes, layers, and textures. From there, I may continue developing the artwork by hand or use additional digital techniques to refine and transform the image. Whatever the tools, every decision is guided by my eye, my emotions, and my artistic intuition.Although digital painting has become my primary medium, I continue to work with traditional materials. That hands-on experience continues to shape my understanding of texture, movement, and composition, influencing every piece I create.

My Journey

I grew up on a farm in Denmark, where quiet time and imagination became a natural part of my life.For many years I was an only child, and while my parents were busy on the farm, I spent countless hours drawing, painting, and creating my own little worlds.Creativity was always around me in different ways. My grandmother was a porcelain painter, and my best friend’s family were artists. I loved spending time in their home, where making art felt like a normal part of everyday life.Those early experiences stayed with me and helped shape the way I see creativity — not as something separate from life, but as something woven into it. Even though I was always creating, it took me many years to fully see myself as an artist.At age 20, I nearly pursued formal art education in the south of France, but I did not yet have the courage or confidence to take that step. For a long time, art remained something private and personal, shared mostly with close family.That changed in 2007, a few years after I moved to the United States. During a conversation with someone I had just met, she simply said, “If you are creating art, you are an artist.” That simple statement stayed with me. It helped me understand that being an artist was not something I needed permission to be. It was something I already was.In 2022, I discovered digital painting, and it opened a new chapter in my creative life. It gave me the freedom to experiment and explore new ways to express myself.Today, my work brings together my traditional roots, my love of color and movement, and the artistic freedom I had been searching for all those years.That journey continues to shape every piece I create.
